Update: St. Petersburg Pier Design Competition Finalists Present to Public
The three finalists of the St. Petersburg Pier competition presented their proposals to a panel of jurors and nearly 200 people, as the presentation was open to the public. BIG started the day off with the Wave and was followed by Michael Maltzan Architecture’s presentation of the Lens. The day concluded with West 8’s proposal, the People’s Pier. Concerns of cost and shade dominated the conversation, as well as materiality, permitting, storm ratings and boating. According to the Tampa Bay online report, the Lens and the Wave generated the most positive attention, stating the People’s Pier received “a more restrained response.” The panel will announce their decision on January 20th.

Design Miami praised Adjaye for his “ingenious use of materials and unique ability to showcase light coupled with his democratized approach to the architectural process.”

Final Design Proposals for the St. Petersburg Pier Design Competition
The final entries are in for the international redesign competition of the St. Petersburg Pier in Florida. The competition seeks to generate a new identity and iconic landmark that will honor the history and relevance of the Pier for the next generation. Michael Maltzan Architecture, BIG and West 8 Urbaban Design and Landscape Architecture are the three architectural firms selected from the list of nine semi finalists. Video: Foreclosed: Rehousing the American Dream / Visible Weather
Michael Bell presents Visible Weather’s vision for the future of Temple Terrace, Florida, rethinking how the cities edge connects to the larger, adjacent city of Tampa. Visible Weather is one of five interdisciplinary teams participating in “MoMA’s Foreclosed: Rehousing the American Dream.” Each team is challenged to re-imagine struggling American cities and suburbs, seeing the current economic crisis as an opportunity to evolve.

Federal Office Building / Krueck+Sexton Architects
Krueck + Sexton Architects have been selected by the GSA Design Excellence Program for the firm’s design of the Federal Office Building in Miramar, Florida just outside of Miami. The 375,000 square foot building is designed with three goals in mind: reduce energy, resources and consumption, incorporate high performance buildings materials and systems and harvest renewable energy sources available on the site. Currently out to bid, the project is scheduled for completion in mid-2014.

DawnTown Exhibition | The First Four Years of Ideas
DawnTown Miami invites you to its very first exhibition, titled ‘The First Four Years of Ideas’ which will open on November 9th, 2011 at the University of Miami School of Architecture. The opening and reception begins at 6:30pm at the Irvin Korach Gallery, and marks the first retrospective ever produced by DawnTown.
The First Four Years of Ideas takes a look back at the very best works produced from their unique competitions. On display will be the winning entries from all four years, as well as curated works, selected by DawnTown’s directors. AD Classics: Xanadu House / Roy Mason
Heralded as “House of the Future”, the Xanadu House by Roy Mason is a domed structure constructed completely form insulating polyurethane foam. The house was appropriately built less than 30 miles away from Disney World’s “Land of Tomorrow” Epcot Center and the two were opened only a few months apart.
Zaha Hadid chosen to design Miami Beach Parking Garage at Collins Park
Architect Zaha Hadid has been chosen by the City of Miami Beach to design its newest parking garage at Collins Park, a neighborhood that’s home to the Miami City Ballet, the Bass Museum, the City Library as well as the Gansevoort, W and Setai luxury hotels. Collins Park is also just blocks away from the Miami Beach Convention Center, the Frank Gehry-designed New World Center and the popular automobile-free Lincoln Road Mall. Video: Architecture Controlling the Future of Sustainability
This video, produced by Maike Acosta and Javier Cuevas of Florida International University (FIU), was awarded the Grand prize for the AIA Florida Committee on the Environment’s (COTE) 2011 Video-Arch Competition. The competition asked for short video clips that emphasize the architect’s primary role in designing sustainable and energy resourceful environments, leading the state of Florida and the nation their sustainable potentials. The theme of Architecture Controlling the Future of Sustainability was required to carry through to the video, intending to be a public service announcement touching on the subjects of the entrants’ choice: energy, water, public health, economics, or land use.
The resulting, winning video is a creative exploration of building and environment, which presents sustainable solutions to electricity and land usage with an alluring jingle to entice all audiences.
FAU College of Computer Science and Engineering Building / Leo A Daly
Leo A Daly architects has recently completed Flordia Atlantic University‘s College of Computer Science and Engineering Building. The new building holds the numerous different labs of the Computer Science and Engineering Programs within a building that leads the way for Florida’s academic buildings in technology and sustainability.

City Square Miami / ADD Inc
ADD Inc shared with us their proposal for City Sqaure Miami, a multi-phase, mixed use project which integrates digital media and architecture to restructure Miami’s Performing Arts District. City Square is an elaborate urban design scheme that is comprised of two gleaming “media towers,” intended to bring brightness and excitement to Miami’s premiere arts and entertainment hub.

The University of Miami Frost College of Music Center for Experiential Music / Performance Architecture
Performance Architecture shared with us their design for the University of Miami’s Frost College of Music Center for Experiential Music. The performance building is foreseen as a “jewel” on Lake Osceola, and its design is a pure reflection of the University’s innovative teaching philosophy. Collaborative teaching and learning are fully facilitated by this proposed structure, which allows multiple facets of interaction among its inhabitants.

Eight Thousand Two Hundred Fifteen / Studio BONNER & Stayner Architects
Designed by Studio BONNER & Stayner Architects, Eight Thousand Two Hundred Fifteen is a proposal for an entrance plaza and children’s play area for Zoo Miami and Miami-Dade Art in Public Places. Emerging from the uncontrollability of hydrology and urbanism, the 80,000 ft2 paving system is comprised of thousands of pre-cast and cast-in-place concrete surfaces that mutate from horizontal to vertical at key points, both adaptive and constantly changing. St. Petersburg Pier Design Competition Announces Semi-finalists
The St. Petersburg Pier, a long-adored and long-outdated West Florida cultural attraction, has unveiled the semi-finalists in its international redesign competition. Of the twenty-three qualified inquiries received, nine were chosen to move forward in the contest. The competition attracted big names in the architecture world; BIG, West 8 Urban Design, James Corner Field Operations, and HOK Architects were among the participants.

Florida Case Study House Competition Proposal / Co-tain & MWBa LLC
Architect Stephen Bender with MWBa LLC., Gretel Castillo, and Lance Moore (aka Co-tain) recently finished a proposal for the AIA Competition to design a Case Study House for Florida. The competition aimed to re-define the notion of the ‘Florida House’ for the 21st century and called for the design of a sustainable 1500 square foot single family home that could withstand the harsh Florida climate while staying affordable. The revitalization of this underutilized public park transforms it into a neighborhood and regional destination through the integration of diversified urban park programs, regional gardens and restored native habitats, and the connection with urban circulation systems.
